Our music is not new but Ray’s arrangements of all songs puts a new face on them and his efforts are focused on highlighting the important words, re-phrasing the content and using harmony to accentuate some words. Ray says “so many songs have good words and good music but they often don’t match”. He works to make an old song catchy, easy to listen to but with RHYTHM. An example is “Hurry On Down” a song from the 50’s by a black singer, Nellie Lucher, a famous singer/piano player who had great success with her songs and “cute” squeaky voice. Ray makes no excuse in using material which is long-gone but which lends itself to “our” Combo and introduces many people to some great songs of by-gone years.
